B&O’s DNA Collection: How a Luxury Consumer Electronics Brand Leveraged NFTs to Showcase Its Legacy and Vision

Introduction

Bang & Olufsen is a Danish luxury consumer electronics company that specializes in high-end audio and video products. The company has a history of innovation and design excellence and has collaborated with renowned artists and musicians over the years.

In 2023, Bang & Olufsen launched the DNA Collection, a set of 1925 NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain, connecting the brand’s iconic products with pioneering NFT artists to create unique collectibles for art, design, and music lovers in Web3.

Background/Problem Statement

Typically, B&O wanted to bridge the gap between iconic brands such as themselves and the NFT art, design, and music community. They approached us with this vision of theirs and to accomplish it, we needed to create a unique platform that could merge the essence of their renowned products with the creativity of pioneering NFT artists. The goal was to offer a collection of NFTs that are not only unique but also valuable, redefining the concept of digital collectibles. Furthermore, B&O wanted to:

- Adapt to the changing preferences and behaviors of consumers in the digital world.
- Reach out and appeal to new and younger audiences who are interested in digital art, music, and gaming.
- Differentiate itself from other brands and competitors in the crowded and competitive market.

Process

To execute this project, we worked closely with the folks at B&O and followed a process that involved:

Selecting four digital products from Bang & Olufsen’s portfolio that represented different aspects of their DNA: Beosound Balance (sound), Beovision Harmony (vision), Beoplay Portal (gaming), and Beosound Level (mobility).

Breaking down each product into different elements with custom-made materials, such as wood, leather, metal, fabric, etc.

Developing a smart contract that would randomize the selection of elements during the minting process to generate 1925 unique NFTs, each with a different combination of product, element, and material.

Collaborating with four NFT artists and four musicians to create Art and Music Vials that could fuse with the DNA Collection NFTs to create a new kind of collectible.

Developing a token-gated platform that would provide exclusive access to future Bang & Olufsen products and experiences for DNA Collection NFT owners.

Integrating with metaverse platforms such as Decentraland, OnCyber, and Open Metaverse to enable users to display and interact with their 3D NFT collection in virtual worlds.

Choosing the Ethereum blockchain as the underlying technology for the DNA Collection NFTs, which uses Proof of Stake (PoS) to reduce computational work by 99.95% compared to earlier PoW-based versions.

Solution

We helped B&O create a platform that combined their timeless products with NFT artistry. The DNA Collection was a new kind of digital collectible that offered exceptional value and uniqueness. We went beyond the usual NFT offerings and adapted to the changing consumer trends, making the collection fit the modern digital world. We also help B&O create a community and excitement around digital artistry.

Essentially, our collaboration with B&O involved the creation of NFTs that combine art, technology, and innovation, establishing the DNA Collection as a symbol of their innovation and blending their legacy with digital creativity.
